College Counseling Services

ObjectiveInSight helps students and families navigate every step of the college planning journey with clarity and confidence. By aligning each student’s academic interests, personal strengths, and future goals, we make applying to college smoother, less stressful, and more intentional. Our approach goes beyond simply meeting application requirements—we help students discover who they are, define what they want, and craft a compelling story that sets them apart. Through personalized strategic guidance, we ensure that applications, essays, and interviews reflect each student’s unique strengths. When you work with us, the college process becomes more than just a checklist—it’s a transformational experience that sets students up for long-term success.

We offer comprehensive, student-centered college admissions consulting with a structured, early-start approach to optimize results. Our program guides students step by step to confidently craft their best applications, ensuring they gain admission to their best-fit college or university with less stress and greater success.

Early High School

We begin by laying the foundation for a successful high school experience, with a focus on identifying the student’s interests, strengths, and goals. Based on this analysis, we make school-year and summer academic and extracurricular recommendations, allowing the student to explore or deepen their interests. Throughout the process, we work closely with you to ensure that your child’s college journey is thoughtfully planned and aligned with their long-term goals.

Focus Areas Include:

  • Comprehensive review of academic performance and extracurricular activities

  • Recommendations on course selection and extracurricular/summer activities

  • Advice on building key relationships with teachers, counselors, and mentors

  • Suggestions for improving study skills, time management, and self-advocacy

  • Creation of an initial college list (after freshman year)

  • Development of a personalized testing timeline and preparation strategy

Junior Year

Junior year is a crucial stage in the college application process, as students work to strengthen their transcripts, engage in extracurricular activities, and manage the pressures of college admissions. Our approach breaks this overwhelming process down into manageable steps so that students feel confident and supported. At this phase, our focus is on excelling in school, exploring potential majors and career paths, and laying the groundwork for outstanding applications by refining the college list and requesting recommendation letters.

Focus Areas Include:

  • Researching colleges to refine and finalize a well-balanced college list

  • Advice on campus visits and demonstrating interest

  • Guidance on requesting strong letters of recommendation

  • Development of a timeline and plan for completing essays and applications

  • Creation of a resume and activity list

  • Preparation of counselor and teacher brag sheets

Senior Year

Senior fall is all about completing applications. During the summer prior to senior year, we begin creating a unique personal essay that stands out from the pack, as well as crafting compelling supplemental essays and “Why Us” statements. In addition, we prepare for admissions interviews by offering practice interviews, sample questions, and feedback to ensure students present themselves effectively.  After all of the applications have been proofread and submitted, we support students by answering questions and troubleshooting issues as we wait for decisions to come in.

Focus Areas Include:

  • Comprehensive essay brainstorming, structuring, editing, and proofreading

  • Assistance in completing, reviewing, and proofreading all applications

  • Admission interview preparation and coaching

  • Review of college decisions and final enrollment decision criteria

  • Support and planning if the applicant is deferred or waitlisted

  • Assistance with the transition from high school to college as needed

  • We wanted to express our gratitude for all the assistance and guidance you provided to [our son] during his college application process. Your professionalism, dedication, and expertise were truly invaluable, and we are immensely grateful for your time and effort. Your insight and attention to detail helped him navigate this daunting process with confidence. We are certain that your support played a major role in [his] success, and we couldn't be happier with the results - he is not only alive (we may have killed him if we were navigating this process without you), but in the end, he is going to Columbia! We have already begun recommending you to friends who don't want to kill their students and are embarking on the college application process! Once again, thank you for everything you've done for our family. Your time with [our son] has made a lasting impact, and we truly appreciate it.

  • Having seen the harsh reality of the college application process through my older sibling, I was terrified to apply to schools. However, Johanna’s thoughtful guidance, constant accessibility and availability, positive and encouraging attitude, impressive organization, and motivating presence made college applications easy. Her talents include not only skillful essay revisions, but also outstanding attention to detail, flexibility, constructive criticism, communication, and personability. She never once questioned my ambition, and with her, I applied to over 20 schools and was accepted into my top choice with a $14,000 per year merit scholarship! I am so grateful I had Johanna’s support and help during this stressful process, and I would highly recommend her to anyone planning on applying to college.

  • With years of experience under her belt, Ms. Baum knows exactly what works and what doesn’t. She approaches college applications realistically- evaluating a student’s grades, extracurricular activities, and leadership positions to give the student a realistic idea of his or her chances with each college.   Regarding college essays, she knows what works and helps students convey their personality and experiences effectively. Thanks to Ms. Baum’s knowledge, wisdom, and mastery of writing, I greatly exceeded my own college-application expectations.
